Latitude 64 Tyyni 2018 in books

It was already in December when we payed the retainer for the camping place because we wanted to be sure to have enough space for the biggest tent ever, Outwell Hartford XL. Because we wanted to be at the spot the whole 10 days, there had to be good bed and mattresses for everyone and it required two times driving there from our home, car full of all kinds of stuff. Finally everything was ready and we were able to sleep the first night in the tent. But of course there was a huge thunderstorm in the first night that took me and my kids to sit in the car for more than an hour... what a pleasant start for Tyyni 2018 week!

Despite my tiredness I could play a decent round in Tyyni Jussin kisat the next morning, only 9 over par and that gave me over 800 rating points. It was quite cold and windy all round but I did not get much rain during the round. Midsummer festival was so cold and chilly we managed to play some Mölkky and barbecue our meal and that was about all. Luckily next night we could get some sleep and rest to be able to play the second round of Tyyni Jussin kisat. My next round was almost as good as the first one despite of tough windy conditions. Ratings were almost exatly the same as for the first round so all in all that was a very smoothly played tournament for me. A great start!

Tyyni 2018 Kartano course was ready to be played on Monday and we took part to the Flex start competition there. My round was quite ok, some good holes and some not-so-good. Almost all holes are too long for me to be birdied so I tried to play par as much as possible. My score was 11 over par so there was much to improve but gladly I still tied for the win and got a gift voucher to NBDG Store. My son won his class too and got even bigger gift voucher than me. How happy he was! He started playing PDGA tournaments here in Tyyni and right away won so much. That was a great day for us both!

The next Tyyni event was Women's event where Paige Pierce gave us useful hints in putting. I would have loved to see her putting too but still that was so good and warm event. Maybe I learned something too.. After the clinic we played the Söderkulla disc golf course and I got so lovely girls in my group. We had a great round chatting and enjoying the game and only after my first birdie at hole 6 I noticed I could play the round under par. I was always putting for birdie but today was not my best days as to putting... so only at hole #11 my drive was close enough and I could finish that hole by two. I finished second with result under par! What a great round and feeling!

The last day before main event of Tyyni I did not play at all but was caddying my son in flex start @ Sibbe. My tennis elbow has been aching since April and it needed this day without throwing and doing anything. We enjoyed the atmosphere as Sibbe was filled with disc golfers and suddenly there were familiar faces everywhere. Like one huge family! We have made so many new friends during these three years in disc golf scene and sometimes it feels so miraculous that it really is only three years since we started playing this sport. Now we live and breathe disc golf every day.

All my rounds in FA40 were played in the afternoon, starting around 4 pm. That was a new challenge on how to spend your day by not getting exhausted and still not just getting too sloppy. I ate my breakfast usually around 7 am and I really loved those mornings when the camping area was still quiet and there were only birds singing and feeding their offspring. One reason of getting up early was the sun that was shining and warming up our tent so it felt like sauna... Holle started his round early and I had good time to follow his scores in Disc Golf Metrix while drinking my latte. First round in Kartano was so solid game only pars and bogeys until hole #13. I somehow managed to throw OB this when playing flex start and was it just because of that I did it again! This hole was also a turning point last year and made me almost collapse back then so I think I have some issues with this hole. Now I tried to save my bogey after the OB and throwed OB twice! Triple bogey did not make me happy but still I could par the next holes except the last one. Result could have been better but I was satisfied with ten over par. I was in third place and that was something I decided to keep.

The second round of Tyyni 2018 was played in Sibbe and now we had a very windy day. If Jussin kisat was played in windy conditions, now it was even harder. We went to watch the last hole that is 120m over water hole and during those conditions it is almost impossible to play safe. I decided to play it with four short and low shots towards the basket and take no OB. My play was really concentrated as now I played in lead group and everyone else was playing so too. First five holes I played best of our card and it gave me more confidence. I really wanted to play well and make no big mistakes. After tough hole #6 I could not play par as there were always some minor mistakes in my tee shot and that lead to scrambling and saving a bogey. A few double bogeys made me feel a bit frustrated but I tried to get over it. Then came the windies holes and the wind got under my skin. I have never been a great player with the wind and today I had to face that again. I made many mistakes in choosing discs and with the angles so that is where Nina got away by playing smoothly like there was no wind. Have to admire that! I was still at third place after playing same result as Heidi who was second but Riikka played her to the lead card and was only few strokes behind. The last hole took us an entire hour as first we had to wait for three more groups to play it and only after that we got to play that ourselves. Definitely not a good hole for amateur women to play in windy day! It was already so late we had no time or energy to visit Beef & Burger night which was a huge disappointment. I had to get me to sauna to get warmed up after that windy and rainy round and after that I was so tired I wanted to get to bed.

Final day came and I woke up early to have my latte while the others were still sleeping. Not Holle though, he was playing his final round at 7:40 am and again I had my time to check his scores. I was feeling a bit cold all day and I had so much difficulties to get myself to the right mode for playing. I tried to eat some pasta but that was not tasty enough. Finally it was time to drive to Keinukallio and all way there I listened Within Temptation and that really helped me! My tee-off song is Faster and when I heard that tpday, I decided to play solid and smart golf. And I did. First seven holes we played even and did not make any mistakes. Front nine I played seven over par and that was about the game I came to play here. The windiest holes were yet to come but today I decided not to be afraid, not to give up. Before the last three holes my score was eleven over par and now it was time to concentrate. I still had my third place but I knew that those last holes meant everything. I noticed also that Sari had played well in the chase card and taken the fourth place.

At hole #15 I managed to save my par by throwing a great approach shot under the pin and that gave me more confidence. At hole #16 I played well the first two fairway shots but kicked trees when approaching the basket in the woods. A few tree hits and suddenly I took a triple bogey. Okay, now play better golf, I told to myself. Next hole I played smoothly to the basket by four shots but missed my 7m putt and got a double bogey. Still quite ok and still without any OB:s. The last hole and I chose to tee off with my Lucid Air Trespass. When my disc fell down the spotter also fell down and tried to decide if it was in or out. Green flag! What a relief! My second throw was not that smart and I got my first OB for the round. And the next layup went OB too. Focus! The following two shots went well staying inbounds and my score for that hole was 8. That was good enough and I finished third! It felt like victory!

It was such an honor to get to the podium and have that cool trophy! My Tyyni 2018 was a success story and I think there is not much I could have done better. Of course there are always some dum decisions and bad putts but that is just part of the game. There is no perfect round. There is definitely not a perfect tournament. This however was good enough and I consider myself as one of the winners of Tyyni. My thanks go to Terhi and Juha and all the volunteers and staff that made this Tyyni week possible! This was disc golfers christmas and midsummer and all you can think of at the same package. Next year I am in - of course - and then I am playing in a different division and leave the younger girls compete for FA40 trophys. Thanks to all my co-players and all friends in the disc golf scene! You are awesome, I am so thankful for finding this community and this hobby and all this stuff that is called disc life.
